| RADON REMOVAL SYSTEM |
|
Friday, February 24 2006 @ 07:55 PM CST
|
This link is for the Radon removal system the City of Pewaukee has chosen to use to remove radon from our municipal well located on Green Road. Federal law now requires that each well in the system meet stringent radon limits and be operational by the end of 2006. Previously, the Federal law allowed mixing of wells with lower Radon levels with ones of higher levels to obtain a lower overall level. This is now changed to require each well to meet the 5 picocuries per liter limit.
The Water Remediation Technology, LLC located in Colorado process has been selected by the City of Pewaukee to process the water from the Green Road well. This process uses a chemical bed made up of WRT’s Z-88™ patent pending treatment media in a series of up flow treatment vessels to reduce gross alpha and remove radium 226 and 228 from the water. The media absorbs the Radium from the water. When the bed is loaded with Radium, it is removed from the tank and transported to a licensed low level radio active storage disposal location and new Z-88 added to the large tank. The Z-88™ process media is ANSI/NSF Standard 61 certified for use in drinking water.
It is estimated that the cost of this installation will be over $1,000,000 and will be covered by the City of Pewaukee’s water utility. Other lower cost systems have been considered, but they require a sewer for the process waste which includes the Radium. Since the cost of bringing a sewer to the Green Road well is estimated to be well over the $1,000,000 , the WRT process was selected as being the best solution.
This report was prepared by the provider of the system. It is not light reading. We have posted it for all you "technical" people who may find it interesting. It shows that results of a pilot test project reduced the Radium from 7.4 to 0.7 picocuries per liter. The process is very simple and requires little maintenance.
This is a 14 page pdf file.
